coffee roasting in Nepal relied on simple methods such as wok roasting over wood fires
or pan roasting, practices that were deeply rooted in the culture but inefficient and
inconsistent. These methods often left beans unevenly roasted, with unpredictable flavors
that limited their marketability and prevented farmers from fully capitalizing on Nepal’s
unique coffee profile.
Recognizing this challenge, the National Innovation Center (NIC) stepped in with a
vision to transform the coffee roasting process. Rajesh Limbu, a seasoned mechanic with
a passion for solving real-world problems, led the initiative. Working alongside skilled
mechanics like Dajangu Sherpa and Am Bahadur Roka, they set out to develop a modern
coffee roasting machine that could bring consistency and quality to Nepali coffee.
The team's journey was one of relentless innovation. They studied traditional roasting
methods and identified the gaps—uneven heat distribution and lack of control over
temperature were the main culprits. Inspired by the need to empower local farmers and
unlock Nepal's potential in specialty coffee markets, they began designing a machine that
could address these issues.
Their innovation wasn't just about creating a machine; it was about creating
opportunities. The modern coffee roasting machine they developed allowed farmers to
roast beans with precision, ensuring even roasting and bringing out the beans' best flavors
and aromas. This breakthrough not only enhanced the quality of the coffee but also
